アート、デザイン、アーキテクチャの語感について。
これらの語源にも興味はあるものの、一般的には英語の外来語として用いるだろうから、英語の辞書を見てみる。
- art
- The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.
- Works produced by human creative skill and imagination.
- design
- A plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is built or made.
- Purpose, planning, or intention that exists or is thought to exist behind an action, fact, or material object.
- architecture
- The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings.
- The complex or carefully designed structure of something.

これらをざっくり意訳すると次のようになる。
- アート
- 人の創造力と想像力によって生み出されるもの。
- デザイン
- 行為や物などにまつわる意図や計画。
- アーキテクチャ
- 複合的な構造体のアートまたはデザイン。
私は英語圏でファインアートを勉強したので、上のニュアンスは、私がこれらの外来語を使う時に意味していることとだいたい同じだと感じた。
よく言われるように、アートの要因は「人」であり、ネイチャー／サイエンスと対峙している。自然の風景がいかに美しくとも、それはアートではない。
一方デザインについては、上記の Oxford 辞書に “the appearance of design in the universe” という用例があることから、ネイチャーに対しても用いることができることが分かる。神が意図したこともデザインなのである。
アーキテクチャの要因は構造物とか建造物といった複合体であって、辞書的にはデザインのサブセットということのようだ。
